Inspired by Delacroix, who visited Algiers and painted a large number of pictures with Algerian motifs,Renoirproduced a few paintings in an “Orientalist” style, although not travelling to Algeria himself until 1881. When exhibited at the Salon of 1870, the work received favourable notice from the critics . The model was Lise Trehot, this being one of the last paintings in which she posed forRenoir. |
